Identifying My Target Audience

My target audience is teenagers aged 14 to 19. My target audience is both males and females as both genders can be interested in the music my magazine is based around. The race of my target audience isn't relevant either they can come from any country and be of any ethnicity to listen to my magazines music genre. The age of my target audience is very relevant, and older or younger audience wouldn't fell the same way about the type of music my genre is presenting. Finally the social ........ of my target isn't relevant either, to listen to any music you do not need to be of some form of class therefore anyone of any class can enjoy the type of music my magazine presents. My target audience will be more aimed towards the "Individuals" and the "Aspirers". I picked Individuals because my magazines music genre isn't the most popular in England and/or the World, individuals find this attractive because they can attach themselves to it and make themselves fell more rebellious and individual because there aren't many people who are like them. I also picked Aspirers due to the fact a lot of the readers will be in bands of there own of play instruments and will aspire to be as good or as famous as those they read about.

The Top 40 Investigation

This is the current top 40 songs on the charts. Unfortunately the is only one song within it that come close to being similar to the type of genre my magazine is going to be. The current charts genre is predominantly indie and pop. My magazines genre being more in the direction of rock and metal. therefore from my investigation into the current chart i can confidently say that a high percentage of the population in England listen and prefer pop and indie music, but there is still an audience out there for my magazines genre but to find them I would have to investigate more into the Kerrang! Top 40.

Unique Selling Points

The unique selling points of my magazine are that it will attract both boys and girls, , it also will have actual bands within it that I am personal friends with, I have also not just spoke about bands and tours i have mentioned other things to do with music such as guitars, cabs and headstocks along with signature versions of guitars and tips to help musician progress. It is colourful therefore eye catching but I will stick to a main colour scheme therefore my magazine will look professional.

First attempt of Article!

_(Insert band name)_, the newest, hottest band to come out of England yet! With the release of their first album _(Insert album name)_ in late march, _(Insert band name)_ are sure to hit the lime light in no time even though they are all under 19. We spoke to Scott Jennings the lead singer/rhythm guitarist about the band.

How do you feel such fame so early into your career has impacted you all?

It just crazy! Real life doesn’t seem real anymore. Its all only just hit us in the past few weeks, but the good thing is none of us have taken it too our heads. We’re still that little band playing in Danny’s garage.

Where do your inspirations come from as a band?

Well my person inspirations have always come from M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold, but we all have our own separate inspirations, Dj’s being The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tom’s being Guns ‘N’ Roses and Danny’s being System Of A Down. Without the wide range of differences in all these band I don’t think that we’d be who we are as a band and individuals today.

What do you guys do for fun outside of the band?

Well I love to be around other friends when I’m not with the band mainly but I also do martial arts. Our bassist Dj plays American Football though, he is huge so I’m sure that sooner or later he’ll break someone! Tom on the other hand also plays the Violin and plays in an orchestral band.

The release of your album is coming up, anything we should look out for on it?

Actually yeah, track 4 was a personal favourite of mine and the rest of the band so definitely check that out. Also make sure you look inside the sleeve, there is a secret prize up for grabs and info on it is inside there.

What the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Well most things I can’t really mention, but Tom once dressed as a werewolf and the rest of us put lab coats on and we chased him down the street Manchester. It was hilarious; he sat in a library with a book on wild wolves while everyone who walked past looking at him. Danny also was once in a chip shop and was being given grief off the guy behind the counter so Danny decided he would go to the toilet inside his shop.

If you weren’t where you are today and your band didn’t exist, what do you think you’d be doing?

That’s are hard one. I would have probably followed my first career path of being a martial arts teacher. I know that Danny would have been some sort of stunt man; he feels the need to jump off everything he sees, even if the object is 12ft tall!

Do you feel that an image for a band is important?

Yes and no. Its hard to stick to one type of image with a band full of totally different people, but I do think that every band should have some sort of image, even though we don’t have one because we are all to different to decided on one.

With social networking systems like Facebook and Twitter that give fans a direct link with bands like you do you find it hard to have a private life?

Not really, we do have a band Twitter and Facebook and we do post information on our up coming gigs and stupid things we’ve got up to and we get a lot of responses but we don’t have thousands of fans sat watching for a new post to come in yet so we don’t really have any problem with keeping certain things private.

Do you think its better to come out of nowhere to becoming famous like you did or to become famous on programs like Britain’s Got talent and American Idol?

I feel its much better to just appear than going on programs like Britain’s Got Talent, if you just appear people have to search around to find out about you whereas people who go on Britain’s Got Talent are opened up to the public before they even make it so everyone already knows everything about them before they even get started. A sense of mystery is always a good thing to have.

Where do you think you and the band with be in the next 5 years?

I hope we'll be playing a huge gigs like Download and we'll have lots of fans and followers so we can keep writing music and having the most fun we've ever had and probably will ever have.

I have selected these image because I feel that they will be similar to those that I will be taking to place in my magazine. I am not going to do my main cover image and double feature page image in a studio as I feel location shots are better but some of my cover pages image will be shot taken in a studio.

Similar to these all the subjects within my photo will be looking directly towards to camera. My image shall look most like the first image; location shot with all subjects lined up or scattered around.

Which Institute Will Produce My Magazine?

IPC will be the institution that will produce my magazine due to its large selection of magazine interests. Looking through their website I noticed they produce magazines such as "NME" and "Uncut" which are both music magazines that will be quite similar to my own. Therefore there is room for my magazine within their bracket of interest due to them already having interest in similar magazines to my own and not having that many so there isn't much competition within their institution.

Double Page Feature Analysis!

This is my analysis of a Double Page Feature article. I shall be using several things similar to this in my own version. I shall be using a large image of the band/artist I am interviewing but will probably be placing it in the certain of the page rather than on the left, i shall be placing a huge title on one of the most interesting question within my article at the top left hand side of my page to attract readers, I shall be placing my actual article around the image of my band/article (depending on where I place the image). I shall be using a similar colour scheme or colours that will match the other pages on my Double Page.

Content Page Analysis

This is my analysis of a rock music magazine's content page. I will be using quite similar features to this within my music magazine, I will definitely be using the idea of put an image with all the pages of importance (even though they won't actually be created). I will also be using a consistent colour scheme that matches my front cover on the contents page. I will also have a side panel that holds all the rest of the page to my three page magazine. Finally I will be using deals, offers, freebies and prizes to attract readers.

Well doen Kurt. You are working hard on this already. Good analysis of a front page. You need to do the same for as contents page and feature. Please also upload your completed prelim with a brief reflection on what you have learnt. What works and doesn't? What will you do again or work on? You should upload the front page but also get Nikki/Mike to scan your contents page sketch and then upload it to the blog next lesson as part of the same post. For homework, conitnue working through the research checklist. See me if you need clarification on anything.

Analysis Of A Music Magazine Front Cover

I will be using the aggressive, "loud" style of titles and images. Ill be adding more photos than this but with be adding many bands to the front cover similar to this (to give the impression I'm trying to reach out to a larger selection of audiences). I'd also like to use a front cover feature image with a full band or single artist looking directly out of the magazine towards the reader or if i chose a single artist i may have him doing some form of pose that is still directed towards the reader. I will not be using the same colour schemes (which i failed to mention in my analysis due to the lack of space). In conclusion my magazine is going to be very closely based on the one shown above but I will be adding my own twists.

Initial Ideas.

My initial ideas are to create a rock music magazine with a new rock band as the subject of my double feature and front cover pages, I intend on involving subjects of interest to the majority of rock style magazine readers, I'l find these out by studying other rock styled magazines such as Kerrang and NME. I will also involve subjects of my own interest so that designing my magazine pages won't become boring.

Conventions of Magazines

Magazines; although all very different, have many conventions that are frequently seen within them all. For example generally all front covers of magazines whether monthly or weekly sold all have conventions such as short memorable titles that are placed within a large header to catch buyers attention. Other conventions are thing such as subjects of interest within the front covers are always clearly presented, for example if a music magazine was to interview a new band the band members faces will all be clearly shown; this is relevant within all magazines whether about cars, fashion or women, all subjects will be clearly presented. For music magazines especially images of bands are generally quite large. Bright colour schemes are usually chosen to try and attempt the attract further attention of buyers and then of course all magaines have a price and barcode somewhere on the front or back.

Contents pages. Contents pages are also similar within magazines, they will generally have the title of the magazine on in a medium sized font (much smaller than the title page) and will obviously incude all the information and listings of the content within the magazine.

Double feature pages. Double feature pages within a music magazine example are usually used for famous or brand new bands or artists. These will generally contain the magazine title, a large image of the band or artists in question and a large header stating the band or artist name in a clear bold font to give an impact on the article. The articles withing the feature pages will be written in a clear font with certain sections highlighted to attract readers attention to points of interest. All of these thing will be seen throughout magazines and will all have continous colour schemes within these pages and front pages.
